As Long As You Love Me —Backstreet Boys

If I’m honest,
sometimes,
as silly as this sounds,
I forget what God is all about:
love.

Our heart is what He’s after.
And when I make following Him twenty-bajillion times more complicated than it is,
I find Him gently reminding me to just love Him;
and He will do the rest.

I’m thanking God for the countless trips to church bumpin’ Backstreet Boys
for this new song He put in my mouth:
one I really needed to sing, and hear.

So, for fun, let’s take ourselves through some lyrics, shall we?
Let’s start with…

“Don’t care what is written in your history,
as long as you’re here with me.
I don’t care who you are
Where you’re from
Don’t care what you did
As long as you…”
You know it…
“LOVE me.”

This simple truth was woven back into my heart as a grin was smeared across my face
in the backseat of the car, leaning against the car door and feeling the wind against my face.
As silly as it may be,
I was being sung to in this moment,
 and God didn’t sing
"Cassie, as long as you never mess up"
or "as long as you are 100% all the time"
He said,
well, you know what He said.

"As long as you love me."

That must be where the whole…
Love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all our soul
and with all your strength.”
Deuteronomy 6:6 came from ;)

Because, I’m finding, that when Jesus said...
“If you love me, you will obey what I command.” John 14:15
He meant it.
His will is a joy.
His will comes easy, comes naturally,
when I simply love Him.

And then, with joy, I find myself saying…
“… “Here I am, I have come-
It is written about me in the scroll.
I desire to do your will, O my God;
Your law is within my heart.” Psalm 40:7-8

And Him reminding me… “For I desire mercy, not sacrifice,
And acknowledgement of God rather than burnt offerings,” Hosea:6:6

And, to rewind a bit,
he doesn’t care…
you know the rest…
Who we are, where we’re from, what we did…
Why? “For you have died,
and your life is now hidden with Christ in God” Colossians 3:3
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
the old is gone, and the new has come!” 2 Corinthians 5:17

And another...
"Every little thing that you have said and done,
Feels like it’s deep within me
Doesn’t really matter if you’re on the run
It seems like we’re meant to be."
Sound familiar?
“Before a word is on my tongue
You know it completely, O Lord.” Psalm 139:4
“You know when I sit and when I rise,
You perceive my thoughts from afar” Psalm 139:2

 So, here's the deal:
“You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
You do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart
You, O God, will not despise.”
Psalm 51:16-17

"So if we’re lonely,
maybe it’s time we leave our life in His hands
People may say we’re crazy,
“If we are out of our mind, it is for the sake of God;
if we are in our right mind, it is for you.” 2 Corinthians 5:13
Or that we are blind,
“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see,” Hebrews 11:1
“Though you have not seen him, you LOVE him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,” 1 Peter 1:8
risking it all in a glance,
“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field.
When a man found it, he hid it again, and in his JOY went and
sold ALL he had and bought that field.” Matthew 13:44
But, we fell in love,
and how He got us blind is still a mystery,
“he made known to us the mystery of his will
according to his good pleasure,
which he purposed in Christ,” Ephesians 1:9
But we can’t get Him out of our head
“On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.” Psalm 63:6
Thank You Lord,
for not caring what was written in our histories,
just as long as we’re here with You."

So please, I beg you, and I urge myself…
Enjoy loving Him,

PS: What if we flipped this, too?
God just wants us to love Him.
What if instead of approaching Him with one thousand things we “need” or “want,”
and a million things we need to be fixed,
all we desired was His love?
If this was all we asked for,
I believe we would not only already have it in full by what He did through His Son,
but I believe we would also be fully satisfied.
For “your love is better than life.”
Psalm 63:3

“The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.” Galatians 5:6
